The history of soccer in Mexico began in 1902 with the creation of the Mexican Amateur Football Association League, which organized the first official tournament with five teams. In 1922, the Mexican Football Federation was founded, which unified the existing tournaments and established the rules of the game.
In 1943, the Liga Mayor was established, marking the beginning of professional soccer in Mexico. This league began with the participation of eight teams. During its first decades, the Major League witnessed the growth of soccer in the country and the consolidation of iconic clubs such as Club América and Chivas.
The Liga Mayor evolved over the years and, in 2012, adopted the name Liga MX. Since 1970, it has been structured into two short annual tournaments: Apertura and Clausura, which has allowed greater competitiveness. Liga MX has grown to become one of the most exciting competitions in Latin America
